What is
Hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy is exercise in water that is heated to 33-35ºC to help people regain or maintain physical function and strength. It also has positive psychological, physiological and social benefits.

Hydrotherapy

  • mobilises joints and strengthens muscles
  • improves general physical fitness, balance and co-ordination
  • promotes cardiovascular fitness.

Why is the Water 33-35ºC?
The water is set at this steady temperature to:
  • relieve pain
  • reduce anxiety
  • relax taut muscles
  • enable damaged joints to move more freely
  • improve circulation
  • prevent people getting chilled
  • help people to enjoy the healing experience.

Make the Hydrotherapy Pool a reality

Public Hydrotherapy Pools are used by:
  • families with children who have disabilities
  • groups of special needs children
  • pregnant women, mothers and babies
  • individuals of all ages with a range of long term disabilities
  • groups of adults doing a variety of exercise programmes
  • sports people regaining fitness after injury
  • people rehabilitating after accidents
  • individuals waiting for or recovering from joint surgery
  • older citizens enjoying the warm water
  • physiotherapists and personal trainers working with their clients.

The Hamilton Hydrotherapy Pool Charitable Trust
Our mission is to raise the $1.2m required to construct a purpose-built hydrotherapy pool.

Hamilton has NO Public Facility which brings together in one place the essential Hydrotherapy Pool characteristics:
  • water heated to 33-35ºC
  • a variety of depths for different ages, heights and purposes
  • a warm and draught-free atmosphere
  • purpose-built disability changing rooms
  • a safe environment for the frail and elderly
  • good access from car park right into pool.

Progress to date
In it's final 10-year plan, adopted on 30 June 2006, the Hamilton City Council announced:

a) That funding provision of $180,000 be made in 2006/07 for the design of a hydrotherapy pool to be located at Waterworld

b)  That Council contribute up to 33% ($590,000) of the capital funding required to construct a hydrotherapy pool.
