PRESS RELEASE
Book by Hamilton locals
honoured in Book Design Awards
A posthumously
published book by Hamilton author Dr Rod East has been shortlisted
in the 2007 Spectrum Print Book Design Awards, announced today.
Published by Rod East's friends as a tribute to his work,
African Wildlife goes up against the established publishing
houses and designers in this year's awards. "I can
only hope that I have managed to express a little of the testament
to what a great man Rod must have been," said the book's
designer Alexandra Johnson. Dr East was
born in Blenheim, and gained a PhD at Lincoln University in 1972,
before going on to work for the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries
(MAF) at the Ruakura Agricultural Centre for twenty years. He
began working for the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric
Research (NIWA) in 1992, and at the time of his retirement in
2002 had risen to become Deputy Chief Executive. In 2006, the
Species Survival Commission (SSC) awarded him the Sir Peter Scott
Medal for Conservation Merit. Dr East died of cancer at his home
in Hamilton on 4 August 2006. Denis Welch,
convenor of this year's judging panel and Deputy Editor of the
New Zealand Listener, says the judges enjoyed
the experience of choosing from such a "wealth of wonderful
design ideas". "We were impressed by the standard of
entries for Best Illustrated Book and found it hard narrowing
down the choice." Welch was
joined on the panel by bookseller Beth Davies and William
Chen, founding art director of Metro magazine and Art
Director of Cuisine. The book design
awards have been run annually since 1997 by the Book Publishers
Association of New Zealand. The winners will be announced on
29 July at an awards ceremony in Auckland.
